1. Absorption & Blood Flow

If you are serious about your health and appearance, then a mindful skincare routine is one of the most important practices to develop, and no matter what season or age you are, absorption and blood flow should be the key foci in your skincare routine; this means eliminating toxins and eating foods to support the skin and gut, drinking plenty of water, balancing sun exposure and sun protection, managing stress, and getting high-quality sleep.

2. Toxin-Free Cleanser

These toxin-free daily cleansers contain aloe vera, chamomile, or calendula and you should use them day and night. Their ingredients are gentle yet effective for longterm use. If needed, you can double cleanse by using the One Love Beauty cleansing oil followed by the Grown Alchemist cream cleanser. A double cleansing system will very gently clear away impurities while also respecting your natural moisture barrier:

3. Sugar-Based Exfoliant

To avoid over-exfoliating and disrupting your natural skin turnover, this Grown Alchemist sugar-based enzymatic exfoliant, derived from fruit, should be used during the night (2 times a week). It is highly effective because the skin recognizes its natural composition, and its vitamin C potency allows a deeper removal of dead skin and impurities:

4. Red Raspberry Seed Oil

Plant based oils have proven to protect your skin from sun exposure (UVA & UVB rays) and provide great nourishment post-care as a serum. This Berry Beautiful red raspberry seed oil is versatile and you can use it year-round and in hot and cold climates:

5. Dandelion Root Tea

Many skin conditions – from acne to eczema to psoriasis – can be linked to poor liver function. A tired, overworked liver can lead to dry, itchy skin, acne, and a dull complexion. Everything you eat, drink, and consume is processed by your liver, so it's important to keep it as healthy as possible. Traditional Medicinals' dandelion root tea can aid in helping the skin to detox due to its vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc. It protects the skin from sun damage, signs of aging, acne, and reduces inflammation. It has also been said that dandelion root tea can increase collagen production and hydrate your skin:

6. Collagen Supplement

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and an essential ingredient that we all need for healthy and youthful looking skin, hair, nails, and flexible joints. It makes up 30% of your body's protein; 70% of the protein in your skin and 80% of the protein in your bones. It also makes up the lining of your arteries, organs, and intestines. We lose collagen as we age. By the age of 20, we start to lose collagen from our skin at the rate of 1% each year. By the age of 50, we've lost 25% of our skin’s collagen. By the age of 75, we've lost 50% of our skin's collagen. Lifestyle choices can also affect collagen production. Other factors that can damage collagen levels are pollution in the atmosphere, tobacco smoke, and any type of exposure to free radicals. Depleting levels of collagen can have several effects on the body:

• Weaker Bones
• Wrinkles
• Sagging Skin
• Joint Pain
• Weaker Muscles
• Gastrointestinal Problems

Those with joint disease or osteoarthritis should know that type 2 collagen may help aid the body in producing new cartilage and blocking enzymes that break down cartilage; the chondroitin present in the supplement helps keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid (water) into the connective tissue. Other signs that you need more collagen are: brown spots and rough skin texture, brittle nails and hair, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, leaky gut, cardiovascular disease, and liver damage. Collagen reduces skin aging, improves elasticity and hydration, and increases fat loss, muscle gain, and strength. It can reduce joint pain and stiffness, as well as support cartilage health. It can improve bone growth and bone mineral density. It also aids in reducing tendon and ligament injuries and tendonitis. Overall, it aids your body's regeneration and wound healing. There are 29 different types of collagen but type 1 collagen (hair, skin, nails, bone, tendons, & ligaments), type 2 collagen (cartilage health), and type 3 collagen (arteries & intestines) make up 90% of all collagen. Select one of these Vital Proteins collagen supplements ranging from 10g to 40g of hydrolyzed collagen per day as typically recommended. I prefer Vital Proteins' marine collagen powder because it is easier for your body to absorb and to put into smoothies. I also like Vital Proteins' hyaluronic acid & vitamin C collagen powder option because the vitamin C assists with absorption. Stay away from any artificial colors and flavors. If you have a busy lifestyle, consider the Vital Proteins collagen capsules, their collagen gummies, or their collagen pills:

7. Food

There are plenty of foods that can help replenish your collagen intake. Look for foods rich in vitamin C, copper, manganese, iron, and zinc, they all support collagen synthesis or help stimulate and aid in the absorption of collagen. Vitamin C is needed to help transfer collagen to the appropriate places in the body through the bloodstream; look for citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, kale, and spinach. Allium-family vegetables such as onions, scallions, and garlic are naturally high in sulfur, which is necessary to produce collagen. For zinc, look for beans, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. Certain types of meat with lots of connective tissues are rich in collagen. Poultry and fish contain amino acids that help to stimulate the production of collagen. Eggs can help boost collagen levels in the body by increasing muscle strength.

What About Topical Collagen?

Ingested collagen supplements are more effective compared to topically applied if you are consuming a balanced diet. Collagen is a large molecule, and in order for it to be effective, it must be in the form of small bioactive peptides so that it can be absorbed through the skin. That being said, using a product that contains retinol (use only at night), like Naturopathica's carrot seed oil night serum or Paula's Choice's licorice cream with peptides, is the best topical choice to aid in the process of producing collagen:
