Good health depends on having a healthy and balanced nervous system. Adaptogens have the ability to fix what's wrong, boost what's right, keep or bring the body in balance through adaptive homeostasis, and prevent the body's functions from deteriorating by communicating with your body's neuroendocrine immune system. These types of herbs aid your cognitive functions to enhance endurance which then assist in your mental performance (attention and memory) and physical performance (precision and recovery).

Adaptogenic herbs work on the body as a whole, like a preconditioning process, working in tune with your body and allowing their benefits to build over time, aiding in adaptability, resilience, and survival of a living (neurally active) organism in stress. Adaptogens take about three weeks to get in sync with your body's rhythms. Rotate your adaptogens seasonally, or every six months. For some, a 4-8 weeks-on and 2-4 weeks-off cycle works best on the body. For example, if relaxing and relieving stress is your focus, start off with ashwaganda during the fall and winter then transition to basil during spring and summer. If you are experiencing great mental or physical stress with headaches and in need of sleep, panax ginseng is the best adaptogen for those symptoms. For best results, take your adaptogens before 3 pm to allow effects to work throughout the day. Some adaptogens are more energizing while others are more relaxing. Stay consistent with the time of day you take your adaptogens to experience maximum benefits.

It is important to adapt well to life's daily demands, to avoid excessive anxiety, worry, or depression, and to get sufficient rest and movement. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that adaptogenic herbs have experienced these things neurally as well (moderate to severe shifting weather/climate conditions, insect attacks, disease, suffocation, poor circulation, etc.), and so they are here on Earth to help our bodies (nerves) build resilience to stress (change) and mitigate its further affects on the body. They are not a cure for stress, and they may not work in extreme or immediate cases of anxiety or severe depression. Furthermore, adaptogens work best in addition to the foundation of a balanced diet and daily adequate hydration.
